Hello Science of Reading friend!

Thank you for checking out this resource. Words like is, has, and was don’t have to be tricky once students learn this important phonics concept: S represents the /z/ sound over 60% of the time!

How it works:

✔ When S follows a voiced sound, we say /z/ (like in bugs).
✔ When S follows an unvoiced sound, we say /s/ (like in maps).
✔ Students will read each word and highlight where S says /z/. When we teach kids WHEN to know whether S says /s/ or /z/, it makes it much easier when it comes to reading and spelling!

This engaging, no-prep activity is perfect for phonics lessons, small group work, or independent practice.
