I said I would never create High Frequency Word Centers but here we are! Did you know that memorizing words is not an effective or efficient way to learn? There are many research studies that show our brains do not store words visually.

Our brains actually store words through a mental process called orthographic mapping. There are many ways to promote this process. One way is through phoneme-grapheme mapping. To learn more about this, click here!

Once we have mapped our high frequency words several times, there is not a need for traditional ways of practicing them (as these methods were developed to provide exposure and promote memorization). HOWEVER, it is helpful for students to see the words and practice reading them in text. That is why I decided to create this resource!

PLEASE NOTE: This is aligned with my HFW scope and sequence, so the phases & colors are based on that.

How to Use:

These cards are meant to be used as a center activity. Provide students with the cards they are ready for (words should have been explicitly taught through mapping before using this). Students take a turn choosing a card. If they can read it, they keep it. If not, they can ask their partner for help or put it back. If they get BANG!, they must put all their cards back into the pile. The person with the most cards at the end wins!

Cards are labeled by phase so you can use phase 1 to start & add phases to the center as needed. The phases build on each other so it is best to introduce them in order!
