I spy is one of my favorite games for working on foundational reading skills. There are so many ways to play! See below for a full description!

Description

I spy is one of my favorite games for working on foundational reading skills. There are so many ways to play! Here are some of my favorites:

Phonological Awareness
Syllables
Teacher says, “I spy with my little eye something that has (insert number) syllables!” Student colors in a picture that contains the correct number of syllables.
Rhyming Words
Teacher says, “I spy with my little eye something that rhymes with (insert word). Student colors in a picture with a rhyming word.
Onset & Rime
Example: I spy a f-ork and students would color in the fork. Onset = the consonant(s) before the first vowel. Rime = trail of letters that follow.

Phonemic Awareness
Beginning Sounds
Teacher says, “I spy with my little eye something that starts with (insert SOUND).” Students color in a picture that starts with that sound.
Ending Sounds
Teacher says, “I spy with my little eye something that ends with (insert sound).” Students color in a picture that has that ending sound.
Middle Sounds
Teachers says, “I spy with my little eye something that has the (insert sound) in the middle.” Students color in a picture with that medial sound.
Blending
Example: I spy with my little eye a /y/ – /a/ – /m/. Students would find and color the yam.

What’s Included:
This set includes pictures and words related to THANKSGIVING! You get 1 slide and 3 black and white printable pages (to be used separately).

Options for Use:

Whole Group

•Print & distribute a coloring page to each student. Students will color in each item as you call out the directions.

•Display copy for the whole class. Call out directions and call on a student to come up & find correct answer.

Centers

•Place black and white copies in page protectors and students use expo markers to find answers.

Small Group

•For intervention on foundational skills, use the same as you would whole group to reinforce skills in small groups.
