Description

Hello Science of Reading friend!

I created this resource to help teach foundational reading skills to older students. Using real pictures and challenges, students will work on these skills without feeling like they are doing something meant for younger students.

This is one resource in a LINE of resources I am creating for older students!

This resource requires kids to isolate and segment sounds in words in order to identify which picture does not match the others.

What do the levels mean?

Level 1 – Beginning sounds – This level has pictures where 3 of the pictures have the same beginning sound and one does not.

Level 2 – Ending Sounds – This level has pictures where 3 of the pictures have the same ending or beginning sound and one does not.

Level 3 – Middle Sounds – This level has pictures where 3 of the pictures have the same middle, ending, or beginning sound & one does not.

In levels 2 & 3, kids have to figure out if we are looking for beginning, middle, or ending sounds so this requires them to isolate all the sounds in each word! Some slides may have more than one correct answer. The important thing is that a student can explain why they chose the picture.

So many ways to play!

-Slides for whole group instruction or warm ups

-Print for small groups or centers

-Keep as full sheets & play No Match (like the slides)

-Cut into individual pictures & have students sort by beginning sound, ending sound, or middle sound

-Show a picture & give students 30 seconds to write as many words as they can with the same beginning, middle, or ending sound (spellings will vary)

-Have students sort by number of sounds (least to greatest)

-Lay out cards & segment a word. Have students slap the word you’re segmenting (ex: say /f/ /l/ /ow/ /er/ & students need to slap the flower)

-Have students re-sort the pictures to create their own ”No Match” pages

-Have them do any of the above with a partner & take turns being the teacher

The possibilities are endless!
