I created these slides as an easy, fun way for you to review phonemic awareness skills with your students. The slides include real pictures and are designed to work with an interactive smartboard or whiteboard.

Description

How to use this resource:

There are many ways to play Sound Off! You will want to divide your students into teams to start. Have both teams line up facing the board. The first teammates in line will start the game.

Next, choose a skill. See the list below for ideas! Once the students know the skill and are lined up in teams, show the first slide. The first teammate to answer correctly gets a point for their team. First team to 10 wins! (You can adjust the winning score to extend the game if you have more time.)

Skills/Ways to Play:

Beginning Sounds – be the first to say the beginning sound of the word

Ending Sounds – be the first to say the ending sound of the word

Syllables – be the first to state the correct number of syllables

Rhyming – be the first to name a word that rhymes with the picture shown

Extension Ideas:

You can adapt this for older students or challenge your students by having them come up with a new word that has the same beginning sound (or ending sound, or number of syllables, etc) as the picture shown. For example, if the slide is showing a jar, students would have to come up with another word that starts with /j/.

You can also have students name the letter(s) that spell the sound after naming the sound. Connecting sounds to spelling is key!
