Did you know that a book isn’t actually decodable until you have taught students the skills needed to decode the words?
My goal in creating these decodable resources is to give your students books and passages that are truly decodable. In order to do this, I ONLY used words that either aligned with the phonics skill being taught, or are high frequency words that are taught with the phonics skills in my scope and sequence.
For example, in the Short A passages and books, the ONLY words included are short a decodable words and the high frequency words that include short a. I also included the word “the”, as that is the heart word that is taught with the short a words. I wanted to also make sure the sentences in the books are not predictable. For skills after Short A, I have included words focused on that skill plus the skills covered prior.

This genuinely changed how I teach. This will be the 3rd year that I have used this resource, along with the phonics worksheets as my small groups for students still learning how to read. There is a distinct difference in how my students view themselves as readers when they KNOW they will be able to access all of the words in a book. They have the tools to decode the words and are able to apply them. They don’t feel too “little kid” for my 2nd graders and provides an opportunity for them to see decodables that they didn’t have in K-1.
