Did you know that memorizing words is not an effective or efficient way to learn? There are many research studies that show our brains do not store words visually.

Our brains actually store words through a mental process called orthographic mapping. There are many ways to promote this process and one of them is using look alike words!

When we use look alike words, we are requiring students to attend to all the letters and sounds in the word. This helps them build the habit of doing this and can also help break the habit of looking at the picture or using the first letter to guess the word.

That is why I created this resource. I am on a journey to unlearn all the things and promoting orthographic mapping is currently my obsession because it works! I always say it’s like magic, but it’s science!

84 Cards are included! These are words with blends and digraphs only. This follows my scope and sequence so there are no words included with skills that have not been taught yet (vowel teams, bossy R, etc).

How to Use:

These cards are meant to be used as a center activity. You will need to provide students with chips or small clips so they can mark the correct word. You can also give students a white board and ask them to write down the correct answers.

Print, laminate, and cut cards before use. If you do not want to laminate, you can also place the full sheet in a page protector and have kids circle or color in the correct answer.
