When we use look alike words, we are requiring students to attend to all the letters and sounds in the word. This helps them build the habit of doing this and can also help break the habit of looking at the picture or using the first letter to guess the word.

This is the scope & sequence that my high frequency words and my decodable units follow.
When we rainbow write words, we are simply copying letters. This task is actually okay if your goal is letter recognition and learning to write/form letters. However, if your goal is to learn words, this is not an effective task. This simple switch to rainbow writing sounds is much more effective!
