I created this resource to help teach foundational reading skills to older students. Using real pictures and challenges, students will work on these skills without feeling like they are doing something meant for younger students.

These assessments are written to be used with my HFW Scope & Sequence and my Decodable Readers as they follow the same progression of words & skills.
This center includes pictures that a student will look at, say the word out loud, and then spell each sound by putting the fries in the box.
I developed this based on 10 years of teaching first grade and research on teaching phonics skills.
This is the scope & sequence that my high frequency words and my decodable units follow.
By making the change from standard spelling tests to skills-based spelling tests, we are creating the habit for kids to attend to sounds and how those sounds are spelled.

These assessments are designed as a way for you to check what skills your students/children have and where you should focus your instruction. These assessments can be given on a regular basis to check progress.

This resource aligns with Unit 3 which includes s as /z/, Silent E, and Vowel Teams. The sentences and passages also include the high frequency words from my scope and sequence.

When we rainbow write words, we are simply copying letters. This task is actually okay if your goal is letter recognition and learning to write/form letters. However, if your goal is to learn words, this is not an effective task. This simple switch to rainbow writing sounds is much more effective!
This is a simple letter that you can send home to parents and let them know what strategies you are using in the classroom to support reading. **Now includes SPANISH versions**
I created these slides as a fun way to review skills! This is perfect for a back to school game and to review throughout the year!
Stop memorizing words & start sounding them out! This unit will help you map out 63 high frequency words that previously may have been taught through memorization. Words with short vowel sounds and open syllable long vowels are included.

I said I would never create High Frequency Word Centers but here we are! Did you know that memorizing words is not an effective or efficient way to learn? There are many research studies that show our brains do not store words visually.
